The redevelopment plans included houses, hotels and entertainment amenities plus a maritime heritage museum and science centre. The derelict land was renamed the "Titanic Quarter" in 2001 and was earmarked for regeneration.Development rights over 185 acres was subsequently bought by Harcourt Developments at a cost of £46 million, with 23 more acres set aside for a science park. A number of heritage features were given listed status, including the Olympic and Titanic slipways and graving docks, as well as the iconic Samson and Goliath cranes. Most of the disused structures on the island were demolished. The decline of shipbuilding in Belfast left much of the area derelict. It was used for many years by the shipbuilders Harland and Wolff, who built huge slipways and graving docks to accommodate the simultaneous construction of Olympic and Titanic. The building is located on Queen's Island, an area of land at the entrance of Belfast Lough which was reclaimed from the water in the mid-19th century. The building contains more than 12,000 square metres (130,000 sq ft) of floor space, most of which is occupied by a series of galleries, plus private function rooms and community facilities. It tells the stories of the ill-fated Titanic, which hit an iceberg and sank during her maiden voyage in 1912, and her sister ships RMS Olympic and HMHS Britannic. It’s both a slow but efficient two-turbine boat, and a fast but power-hungry four-turbine boat.Titanic Belfast is a visitor attraction and a monument to Belfast's maritime heritage on the site of the former Harland & Wolff shipyard in the city's Titanic Quarter where the RMS Titanic was built. At speed, 4 large direct drive turbines do the work. At low speed, the Caroline can run efficiently with two props idle and the other two props driven by two small steam turbines through individual gear boxes. In addition to the 4 main turbines, the designers added two small turbines that drive two of the prop shafts through a reduction gear. What we found particularly interesting is the approach the Caroline designers took to the challenge of delivering both 28 kts with 4 turbines running flat out and yet still be able to achieve efficient operation and reasonable range when not running at full speed. The turbines and condensers are cleaned and well lit so you can see many of the details. ![]() The Caroline has 4 large direct- drive Parsons turbines that can deliver 40,000 shaft horsepower through 4 props to propel the Caroline to 28 kts. ![]() Nearly every part of the Caroline was accessible, and the engine rooms were a particularly interesting part of the tour. The district also is home to a number of excellent nautical exhibits, including the Titanic Belfast museum that describes the construction, loss and underwater discovery of the Titanic the SS Nomadic, a tender to the Titanic and the only surviving White Star vessel the Thompson Graving Dock, where the Titanic was dry-docked during construction and the HMS Caroline, the only surviving ship from the World War I Battle of Jutland.īelow are trip highlights from October 25th and 26th, 2017 in Belfast, Northern Ireland. ![]() The 185-acre (75 hectare) site includes Titanic Studios, Belfast Harbour Marina, and hotel, office, education, retail and apartment complexes. Belfast’s Titanic Quarter stands on part of the shipyard where the ill-fated vessel was built and is one of the world’s largest urban-waterfront regeneration projects.
